breeding system

The method by which a plant can successfully produce seeds. Plants have three basic breeding systems: outbreeding or outcrossing, where pollen from a different individual is needed to fertilize the egg of the maternal plant to produce seeds successfully; selfing or self-fertilization, where pollen from the same individual can fertilize the egg and produce seeds; or apomixis, where seeds can be set without fusion of gametes.
